STC football contest: The tradition continues with a new format™®©
It’s that time of year again. This year, we are looking at doing something a little different. Rather than the picks contest format, we will do a survivor-pool type thing in which each week, contestants pick one team straight up and teams can only be used once in a season. Unlike the typical survivor pool, you will not be eliminated if you lose, we will simply keep a won-lost record. The winner is the one with the best won-lost record at the end of the regular season. Here is a first pass at rules. Please comment where you see fit and hopefully everyone will be happy with them.

The winner
The winner is the player who has the best won/lost record at the end of the regular season.
The picks
Each player picks exactly 1 straight-up winner per week. All picks must be entered by 12:30p eastern US time on Sunday. That is, picks must be entered 30 minutes before any games start. Even if you are picking an evening or Monday game, you must enter your pick before games start on Sunday.

Players may only pick a particular team to win once during the regular season. For example, if you pick Cincinnati to win in week 1, you cannot pick them to win again for the rest of the season. You are responsible for not reusing a team. If your pick is invalid because you have already used that team, you will be given a loss for that week.

If you fail to make any pick, you will be automatically assigned the next team you have available in alphabetical order by team locale. For example, if you don’t enter a pick and you haven’t picked Arizona yet this season, your pick will be Arizona. If you have used Arizona but not Atlanta, it will be Atlanta, etc.

ADDED: You may edit/change your pick if you so desire before the deadline.

Thursday/Saturday games
Later in the year, some games will be held on Thursday or Saturday. If you wish to use a team playing on Thursday or Saturday, you must enter your pick 30 minutes prior to the game you are picking. Everyone else can wait until Sunday to enter a pick.

Week 17
Should the winner of the contest not be clinched entering week 17, we will use the following special procedures.

Players relevant to the possible first-place tie will email their week 17 picks to a neutral arbitrator so that they can be co-released if necessary. For these players and this week only, players will enter 3 valid picks. These picks must be ranked 1), 2), and 3). The first-ranked pick will be used as normally. Should a tie occur after week 17 first-ranked picks are resolved, we will attempt to break the tie by looking at the second-ranked picks. Should that fail to resolve the tie, we will move to the third-ranked picks. If the players are still tied after looking at third-ranked picks, they will be co-champions.

Let me start off by saying - it really doesnt matter to me how you guys decide to do it.

But in my opinion, this modified survivor type contest really in no way crowns a pick champion. I think if every Survivor contest ran like this, with someone who loses in week 6, not being eliminated, I think pretty much all contestants would end up with a significant winning percentage. I will be honest - I wouldnt expect any of the four of you (BS, Jiz, Kiddo, Hoolie) to be worse than 13-4, maybe 12-5.

I understand that it is supposed to get harder late in the year. And week 16 and 17, someone may be limited by teams they picked already. But then that also brings you to the case where teams are locked into a play position, and already announce their starters will be sitting out. So this gives the chance that you may be able to pick against a top team because you know they arent trying. Also maybe an average team (Jags for example) are eliminated. So they pull Garrard and go with their rookie for the last 2 or 3 games.

I think now with a few years of history, we can eliminate "issues" and continue the pool as it was/ However, I do like some of the new suggestions.

I feel the contest should be the same as the prior years, and the rules should be as follows (copy/paste from prior years modifed with current suggestions):

1) Post your contest picks each week in the 2011 NFL picks thread. The lines for each game will be posted in the thread in American odds format. Your pick on any particular day must be submitted 30 mins prior to the posted start time of the first game of the day. If you pick early and the line changes during the week, you retain the line at the time you posted. If you are picking a Thursday game, it must be submitted 30 mins prior to the start of the game. (So if it happens to be Thanksgiving, your picks for the day will be due in much earlier than if its just a Thursday night gam,e) If you are picking a Sunday night game, in must be submitted 30 mins prior to the start of the FIRST game of the day which was most likely 1pm. So in that case all picks for that Sundays games were due in by 12:30.

2) Scoring is on a win one unit for favorites/risk one unit for underdogs basis. For example, if you win a pick that was +270, your score will go up 270, if you lose it will go down 100. If you win a pick that was -270, your score will go up 100, if you lose it will go down 270. Highest score at the end of the playoffs (super bowl is last game) wins.

3) Alternate lines are sometimes listed for the point spread and over/under on the same game. You may only pick one over/under line and one point spread line for any particular game. You may also pick the money line on that game.

4) Other than the 3 pick limit for a single game described in rule 3), there is no limit to the number of picks you can make in a week. However, you must make at least 1 pick per week. Failure to make a pick in a given week results in a -100.

5) Contest continues through the Superbowl

6) All $100 Entry fees must be sent to me via PayPal ( by Sunday, September 4th, 11:59PM, EST.

7) In the case of a close contest coming into the final 2 Sundays of football (AFC&NFC Championship and the Super Bowl) any contestant may email me their picks each week.

a) Your desire to use email to make picks for the final two weeks of the contest must be stated in the picks thread by Wednesday January 18, 2012, 11:59pm EST. If you do not opt for email picks by that time, the picking rules outlined above will apply. Once you have opted for email picks in the final two weeks - No picks posted directly in the thread will be accepted under any circumstance.

b) Only your first email will be accepted each week. Please make sure all picks are listed in one email.

c) AFC/NFC Championship Sunday, 1/22/12 (3pm and 6:30pm EST Start times) and SuperBowl Sunday 2/5/12 (6:30pm start time). Any emailed picks for any games will be due in my inbox 12:00 noon, EST on the Sunday of the games. Thus allowing for ample time for confirmation of your picks.

d)Prior to those days, I will provide (Posted in the thread) contestants an email address to be used. In the case that I am not at my computer, I want to ensure that the email address in use will be forwarded to my phone so that I may confirm your picks. I will send you a confirmation email. I will also provide a text message and voice contact number for the final two Sundays so you have multiple ways to make sure I confirm your picks.

e) Once the game has started, the contestants can feel free to post Screen Shots, in Jpeg format, of my confirmation email. In the case of any discrepancy, I will post screen shots of the emails received from the contestants.

The picks contest is more fun, but I'm not going to put up with Hoolie again. I think the single team contest is easier and less likely for Hoolie to destroy.

If people want to do the picks contest, I don't mind. We can see if Hoolie can manage to get through a season with Todd's rules without ruining it. I can do the odds posting thing still.

Or if people want to do the simplified version, I'll try that.

Todd should post confirmation here when people send their money in.

It sounds like the deadline is Sunday before the games.

This is screenshot of suicide pool options. Could we use this? I marked in red an option that I didn't understand even with the pop-up explanation.

From my reading of that, you can restart the pool during the season if everyone loses, but I don't see an option to let everyone make picks every week.

It'll be easy enough to keep track of here. My pick for week 1 is...

Zorba 09-10-2011 09:42 AM

you sure we don't want to use CBS sportsmen? We can set it to make all our picks worth zero points except for 1 pick which of course is your suicide pick for the week. Very easy to track this way. What do you think?

Otherwise , who do I send my pick too? I'm ready.
